SCHOOL’S OUT! This June school holiday, join us at The Habitat Penang Hill for a brand-new edition of our Little Botanist Workshop! Designed especially for curious young minds aged 7–12, this engaging, hands-on experience introduces the wonders of plants through fun exploration and creative expression.

A Fun Family Day Awaits You!

The day begins with a Nature Wonders Mini Guided Walk through our ancient rainforest, where young explorers are grouped for a 45-minute adventure along The Habitat’s historical trail. Led by our experienced naturalists, kids will learn about plant adaptations and fascinating plant defense mechanisms.

The History of Plant Dyes & Stamping

Did you know that long before crayons and paint sets, people used flowers, leaves, and even fruits to colour their clothes and create art? For thousands of years, cultures across India, China, and ancient Egypt discovered how to make beautiful colours from nature. It was common to use indigo leaves for blue, turmeric for yellow, and beetroot for red. Alongside dyeing fabrics, people also began pressing and stamping plants directly onto surfaces like cloth and paper, capturing the unique shapes and textures of leaves and flowers. This early form of eco-printing wasn’t just decorative, it was a way to tell stories, record nature, and celebrate the beauty of the natural world. In this workshop, children step into that rich tradition, using nature’s colours and shapes to create their own art. It’s a playful and meaningful way to explore creativity, sustainability, and the magical link between plants and people.

Play With Plant Dye

After their walk, participants will arrive at the Andaman Tents to let their creativity bloom! First, they’ll learn about natural plant dyes before getting hands-on with their very own cotton tote bag. Using colourful plant-based pigments, children will design and dye their bags, an activity that blends sustainability and art. Our team will help fix the colours before setting the bags out to dry.

Then comes the stamping session! With plants gathered from the rainforest walk, kids will use leaf patterns and natural dyes to create their own Mandala-inspired or free-style artwork on A6-sized paper. Once dry, their creations will be placed into frames, making it a rainforest memory they can proudly display at home.

The Perfect Activity in Nature for Kids!

The Little Botanist Workshop is more than just a fun day out; it’s an immersive learning experience designed to spark a lifelong love for nature. Whether your child is a budding naturalist or simply loves being outdoors, this workshop will leave them inspired, informed, and a little more in awe of the green world around us.

What Is Forest Bathing?

Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, originated in Japan during the 1980s as part of a national health initiative. Translating to “taking in the forest atmosphere,” this practice encourages individuals to engage all five senses while walking slowly and mindfully through nature. Unlike hiking or exercising, Shinrin-yoku is not about reaching a destination, it’s about presence, awareness, and restoration.

At The Habitat Penang Hill, the Forest Bathing experience incorporates elements of Wim Hof breathing techniques to further deepen your connection to the body and enhance mental clarity. This powerful breathing method complements the calming effects of nature, helping participants feel more grounded and present throughout the session.

Scientific studies have shown that Forest Bathing can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), reduce blood pressure, boost the immune system, and enhance overall feelings of well-being. As urban lifestyles become increasingly fast-paced, Forest Bathing offers a gentle, accessible remedy for stress and mental fatigue.

Awaken Your Five Senses at The Habitat

The Habitat Penang Hill offers the perfect backdrop for Forest Bathing, nestled within the UNESCO Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, it is a sanctuary of biodiversity and serenity. Each session is carefully designed to activate and engage the five senses, helping participants reawaken their connection with nature.

See

Observe the layered greens of towering dipterocarp trees, each leaf a different shade of life. Watch as golden beams of sunlight filter through the canopy, casting shifting patterns on the forest floor. Notice the flutter of butterflies, the silent glide of the elusive flying lemur, or the rustle of leaves stirred by unseen creatures. Every subtle movement is an invitation to slow down and truly see the rainforest come alive.

Hear

Close your eyes and listen deeply. The rainforest comes alive with the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, the layered chorus of birdsong, the rhythmic hum of insects, and the enthusiastic calls of monkeys echoing from treetop to treetop—each sound a reminder that nature is never silent.

Touch

Let your hands and feet reconnect with the natural world through earthing. Run your fingers along the rough bark of ancient trees and feel the damp earth beneath your soles as you walk barefoot to experience each texture anchoring you more deeply into the present moment.

Smell

Draw in slow, intentional breaths and let the forest fill your lungs. Notice the rich, grounding scent of rain-kissed leaves, the gentle sweetness of blooming wildflowers, and the earthy perfume of moss-covered bark of aged wood—all combining to calm your mind and uplift your spirit.

Taste

Conclude your journey with a soothing tea-tasting ritual, where each sip of the herbal blend invites calm, presence, and a gentle reflection on your sensory experience in the rainforest.

When The Habitat’s canopy walkway was under construction in 2015, co-founders Harry and Reza Cockrell reached out to international canopy scientist, Dr. Meg Lowman, one of the world’s first arbornauts (treetop explorers) for advice on making research and education a central pillar of their fledgling ecotourism venture. Lowman had pioneered construction of canopy walkways around the world, through her Florida-based NGO called TREE Foundation which shares designs and educational information to create walkways in diverse forests.

At the time, Lowman was also the Director of Science and Sustainability at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS), overseeing a staff of over 100 field researchers. With Lowman’s expertise, The Habitat created a long-term vision for research in the unique forests surrounding Penang Island. Lowman partnered with the University of Science Malaysia (USM), becoming an Adjunct professor to foster collaboration between local faculty and The Habitat, as well as to mentor students from the School of Biological Sciences. She obtained a grant from The Habitat Foundation (THF) to fund international scientists to partner with local biologists to conduct a ten-day bioblitz, which is an intensive survey of everything living in a specific site. Lowman also obtained an American-based foundation grant to fund K-12 students to participate in the bioblitz through a program called the Jason Learning Project.

This team of over 100 scientists and students discovered over 2,500 records of what was living on Penang Hill. Working around the clock, the enthusiastic biologists found organisms ranging from scorpions to water bears to orchids. Such an extraordinary list of species propelled two research outcomes: 1. The publication of a book about the bioblitz results; and 2. the creation of a dossier that formed an important part of an application that resulted in the designation of Penang Hill and its surrounding forests and coastal and marine national park as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Program. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves, numbering over 750 sites globally, are model sites for environmental conservation, research and sustainable development.

The bioblitz also resulted in many positive outcomes for The Habitat: a. tree-climbing training for many staff, including women; 2. Updated education outreach about biodiversity on Penang Hill; 3. training by Lowman for the education staff: and 4. Subsequent grant program to fund students to participate in research on Penang Hill.

A longer-term plan for a canopy research program on Penang Hill and within the newly designated Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve is still in the planning phases, but the canopies of Penang Hill have spotlighted this site for many visitors, including international scientists and ecotourists. Global partnerships between The Habitat, USM, TREE Foundation, CAS, and local K-12 schools are a wonderful example of how the unique biodiversity on Penang Hill has inspired both local and global science education and conservation.

Lowman now oversees a project called Mission Green to complete 10 canopy walkways in ten of the world’s most important forests, to promote research and ecotourism at these sites. The Habitat is one of those ten forests, indicating how important Penang’s trees are as an internationally-renowned forest.

The Origins of Mandala: A Sacred Circle of Meditation

The word “Mandala” originates from Sanskrit, meaning “circle” or “completion.” Traditionally used as a meditative tool, mandalas symbolize harmony and wholeness. Today, this ancient art has gained popularity for its therapeutic qualities, promoting relaxation and mental clarity.

Now, The Habitat Penang Hill invites you to immerse yourself in this meditative art form within nature. This workshop blends the intricate beauty of mandalas with the tranquility of the rainforest, offering a unique experience of mindfulness and creativity.

The Benefits of Mandala Dotting

This two-hour session is more than just a painting class—it’s an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and celebrate yourself. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Be Present – The rhythmic process of dotting requires focus, drawing you into the moment and away from distractions. With each dot placed with intention, you’ll find yourself immersed in a peaceful flow state.
  • A Clear Mind – Counting dots and focusing on precise placements naturally quiets the mind, offering a mental reset amidst the tranquil sounds of the rainforest.
  • Deep Relaxation – Creative expression combined with the soothing presence of nature fosters a sense of peace. The fresh air, birdsong, and gentle rustling of leaves enhance your inner calm as you paint.
  • Self-Expression & Emotional Release – Art is a powerful tool for self-discovery. Whether you’re feeling joyful, contemplative, or seeking balance, mandala dotting provides a creative outlet for self-expression.
  • A Sense of Control – In a world filled with uncertainty, creating something with your own hands brings a sense of stability and empowerment. The structured, symmetrical nature of mandalas offers a grounding experience.
